Lonesome Dove Retreat

Approximately 80% of the property is covered in old-growth forest, dominated by majestic live oaks, post oaks, water oaks, pecan, hickory and black walnuts, with a mix of other native hardwoods. A deep creek runs through the center of the ranch, creating topographic diversity with over 60 feet of elevation change and long-range views of the surrounding countryside. The front of the property features more open areas with native grasses including silver bluestem, silver beard grass, bushy bluestem, broomsedge bluestem, and many others—ideal for wildlife habitat and aesthetic contrast.  These areas are also covered in spring flowers such as bluebonnets, Indian blanket and Texas paintbrush flowers. Over two miles of walking trails meander through the trees, creek crossings, and open glades, creating a peaceful, park-like setting and are all well maintained for hiking, walks and mountain bike riding.

A highlight of the ranch is the 1.5-acre fishing lake, stocked with largemouth bass. It’s the perfect place to cast a line in the evening, kayak, or watch the sunrise reflect off the water. The pond is equipped with an aeration system to keep the aquatic fauna in great condition.  The creek below the lake flows through the ranch and enhances the trail system, wildlife habitat, and natural beauty. Water is supplied via a county water line to all of the homes.

The main home is approximately 2,350 square feet and is over 100 years old, the property has been thoughtfully renovated while preserving its original charm, including the original longleaf pinewood floors, shiplap and beadboard walls and ceilings, and built-in shelving. The home includes two bedrooms, two and a half bath, a den, a living room, a combined kitchen/dining area, and a sunroom overlooking the shaded backyard. The outdoor living area features expansive decks and a swimming pool nestled beneath massive live oaks and well manicured landscaping. A two-story historic cabin—relocated from Fredericksburg—sits along the lake and serves as a guesthouse, with a kitchenette and living area downstairs and a spacious bedroom upstairs. This historic cabin was hand-hewn, chinked log cabin and is over 150 years old.  It was painstakingly disassembled and reassembled on site with all of the original logs and re-chinked and is in wonderful condition with exposed interior beams and period decorations that take a visitor back to a simpler time, but with all of the modern conveniences of home. A second cedar-lined guest cabin, tucked under the forest canopy, includes a bedroom, small kitchen, and breakfast nook overlooking a deep creek. Next to the main home is a large barn and workshop, perfect for equipment storage, wood working, blacksmithing  and a multitude of other hobbies. All improvements have been well-maintained and thoughtfully situated for convenience and privacy.
