Refugio may be a tiny dot on the cay to Corpus Christi, but it has a few claims to fame. It was the site of the Battle of Refugio in 1836 during the Texas Revolution; Refugio High School has won five high school football state titles; and it is the home of MLB Hall of Famer Nolan Ryan, one of the greatest pitchers in the history of baseball. Horse-riding enthusiasts will be satisfied with the equestrian facilities and barns to house the animals, giving anyone with a saddle the chance to live out their cowboy fantasies. Hunters can go after whitetail deer, Rio Grande turkey, dove, bobwhite quail and feral hogs, but there’s also a small herd of zebras on the property that add an exotic flair to the Texas wildlife.
