Topography, Rangeland & Habitat

In considering what makes up a great wildlife ranch you must start with good soils. Contigo sits on almost 95% fine sandy loam soils which provide abundant fertility to the native grasses and woody browse that thrive within its borders. There is an excellent mixed brush habitat on the ranch for the big game boasting abundant species diversity. The species throughout the ranch include but are not limited to Guayacon, Brasil, Lime Prickly Ash, Granjeno, Texas Ebony, and Texas Persimmon to name a few. Furthermore, in the naturally open and manicured quail areas, there are native grasses common to the area such as little bluestem, four-flower trichloris, hooded windmill grass, and plains bristle grass.

Wildlife

Contigo Ranch is a hunter’s paradise. Beginning with a quail-forward approach, the ranch has been manicured with lanes and trails to hunt Bobwhite Quail. The annual burning regimen has kept the ranch in excellent condition and the population proves that the work has paid off. With the location of the ranch being in such proximity to Premont and the surrounding ag fields, the dove hunting is amazing. The water holes are manicured and mowed for hosting large groups of dove hunters. In speaking with the ranch manager, there is rarely an outing where limits are not taken by the hunting party.

For the big game hunter, you will have a hard time finding a place in this area that provides such diversity and quality of game. The ranch has multiple pastures that all feature tremendous whitetails that often exceed 200”. Top-end deer on the ranch have been more than 250” and their trophy classes are well above the norm. In certain pastures, there are exotic species that provide great year-round hunting. Some of the exotic species that thrive on the ranch are Eland, Gemsbok, Scymitar, Zebra, Nilgai, Blackbuck, Blesbuck and Axis. The ranch is fully equipped with hunting blinds and feeders strategically placed throughout the ranch for archery and rifle hunters.
