Bar W Ranch - Donley County, Clarendon, TX
The Bar W Ranch is a unique and scenic 950-acre property located in an area steeped with deep ranching history and tradition. The ranch is currently being utilized to run cattle, with seasonal hunting by the owners. Some of the ranch is enrolled in CRP. The Bar W Ranch will provide its new owner’s opportunities for farming/ranching, hunting, recreation and potential home sites.
Location
The Bar W Ranch is located approximately 5 miles west of Clarendon, TX in Donley County and about a 45-minute drive from Amarillo, TX. The northern end of the property is accessible by FM 2362 and County Road Q. The ranch is about 2 miles south of US Highway 287.
Topography, Rangeland & Habitat
The topography of the ranch is varied, with much of the eastern portion being relatively open, flat grasslands. These grasslands were farmed at one time, but have since been placed in the CRP, and currently provide a dynamic stand of native grasses. Additionally, wild plum bushes, sage brush and mesquite trees are thinly scattered on the eastern side of the ranch.
Toward the western part of the ranch, the land transitions into rolling sandy hills with a good grass turf, scattered sage brush and cedar trees. Hackberry Creek runs in a north-south direction about a mile through the property on the western half of the ranch. Hackberry Creek is dominated by hackberry and cedar trees which provide good cover for wildlife.
Grasses observed include several varieties of gramma, buffalo grass, bluestem grasses and more.

The ranch has a perimeter five-strand barbed wire fence around the entirety of the property, most of which is adequate. Electricity runs along the entire northern edge of the property and there is also electricity a quarter mile into the north boundary at the location of an old home site and at the submersible well, which is near the north boundary of the ranch.

The Bar W Ranch is believed to be on land once encompassed under the original JA Ranch, which founded by Charles Goodnight and John George Adair in the late 1800’s. The JA Ranch is the oldest cattle operation in the Texas Panhandle. The JA ranch is still operated today by the descendant of John George Adair.
