Location: The entrance is approximately 9.7 driving miles southwest of Bandera on paved highway FM 470 between Bandera and Tarpley. The property is approximately 60 miles from the San Antonio International Airport.
Topography: This scenic hill country ranch has nearly 400’ of topographical relief with a high point some 1622 feet above sea level. The ranch’s broad bottoms, rocky canyons, high points and extensive ridgelines make this an exceptionally diverse property.
Habitat: Typical of this part of the Hill Country the habitat includes Oak Juniper woodlands with incredible tree diversity including Live Oaks, Ash Juniper, Spanish oak, Shin Oak, Lacey Oak, Texas Madrone, Cherry, Redbud, Walnut and even Cypress trees! Additionally, diverse brush species, succulents and native grasses provide excellent habitat for wildlife.
Wildlife: The Hamman Scout Ranch is home to populations of white-tailed deer, turkey, varmints, feral hogs, Aoudad and other free ranging exotics. In addition, this area of Texas is a known destination for birdwatchers! Spring Lake offers a small fishery as well.
Improvements: The ranch is only lightly improved due to its historical use as a more primitive scout camp. As this chapter comes to an end, a new one begins. The Sam Houston Area Council Boy Scouts of America is in the process of building a new 2,816 acre Scout camp to serve its Scouts in the Houston Region. That new Scout camp is in the Sam Houston National Forest, will be one of the finest Scout camps in the country and used to create a 21st century Scouting experience for Scouts and their leaders.
Neighbor of note: On its southerly end, the ranch borders the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department’s 5,369 acre Hill Country State Natural Area for over a mile providing a conservation minded neighbor that will never be developed. Historically, the ranch had secured permitted direct access to the Natural Area for expanded equestrian enjoyment.
