Hill Country ranch owned by Mrs. Baird’s family hits market for $12.9M

The sprawling Hill Country ranch owned by the family behind Mrs. Baird’s bread products has hit the market with a price tag of $12.9 million.

Located about six miles east of Johnson City, the Baird Miller Creek Ranch includes more than 760 acres of rolling grasslands, riparian landscapes and panoramic views of the Pedernales River valley, according to a listing by brokers Ross Studer, Lindsey Holubec and Charles Davidson of Republic Ranches.

“The ecological values found in these hills and river valleys between Austin, Johnson City and Dripping Springs warrant stewarding and protection for future owners and heirs to enjoy the natural beauty and solitude they offer,” Studer said in a statement.

Studer said the Baird family, who founded the beloved Texas-based Mrs. Baird’s bread company, has been passionately preserving the ranch since 1951. In 1990, a conservation easement was placed on the property to limit its future uses and protect the ranch in perpetuity.

Nearly 4,000 feet of Miller Creek carves through the property, with a concrete dam constructed in the 1950s at the center stretch of the waterway. The ranch also includes three ponds that can be stocked with fish, three water wells and a large submersible pump in the creek historically used to provide water for gardening.

“Miller Creek flows through the property providing year-round live water with unparalleled privacy,” Studer added. “That’s a duo of attributes that are hard to come by these days.”

The ranch includes a main house located by the creek, a guest cabin and a tenant’s house, as well as a storage and equipment barn, a hay barn, a small family cemetery and various other outbuildings and sheds. It is lined with low fencing with interior cross-fencing for the small herd of longhorn cattle the current owner is grazing.

A mix of wooded and open grasslands attracts a variety of wildlife including white-tailed deer, turkey dove, quail, and “of course, there will likely be a feral hog rooting around from time to time,” the listing says.

Situated about 69 miles from San Antonio, one of the most important aspects of the ranch is its location and accessibility in the heart of the Hill Country with close proximity to major cities and well-known towns, Holubec said.

“This particular area has a handful of conservation-minded landowners who have dedicated their properties to conserve and preserve this extraordinary part of Texas,” she added.

Mrs. Baird’s, an iconic Texas brand known for its bread products and sweet treats, was founded in 1908.
