Most of the East Texas region consists of the Piney Woods ecoregion, which thins out as it nears the Gulf Coast. East Texas is known for its several lakes that provide fishing, boating and other recreational activities as well as its four National Forests; Angelina, Davy Crockett, Sam Houston and Sabine. East Texas receives more rainfall than the rest of Texas. The Sabine, Trinity, Neches, Angelina and Sulphur Rivers are the major rivers in East Texas. The region can be described as pine and pine-hardwood forests with scattered areas of cropland, planted pastures, and native pastures. Timber and cattle production are important industries in the region. Farms and ranches are relatively small in size compared to the state average.
